Resourcing....a letter to the extended team...

 Resourcing....

Just a note to say hello and to pass along an interesting article that came my way from Marty Davis via Bill Goodman related to church planting.  As I know that all of you share a love for the church and its multiplication, I thought you might find this article as thought provoking as I did.  A couple of points were especially challenging for me:

The bit about “getting isolated in the center” especially the comment that “because you get larger, you give more attention to internal systems to keep the machine going. So you're not in touch many times with the little movements on the fringes.”  I have certainly perceived that “suck towards the center” in my own life and ministry.  Another comment that it would be good for us to kick around with respect to our labors globally was the comment that “...innovation always happens on the fringe, and the larger an organization is, the more removed the leaders are from the growing edges where real change can take place. You constantly have to fuel the fringe.”  I remember a challenge I received some years ago about working internationally, especially in a trans-local role like many of us do.  A brother kindly observed that, to be meaningful globally you have to be engaged locally...your life and ministry must be rooted in a context of local wrestling with the issues –theologically, practically, and palpably.  I easily get lost on my keyboard and the maze of emails that come my way...

Certainly, you (and I) will take exception with some of this brother’s thinking but, at the end of the day, the pot must always be stirred in groups like ours that desire to “contend for the faith once delivered to the saints” and to embrace “the increase of his government and of his peace” - both are apostolic realities that should define our life together.

So here is the article...

Affectionately from our end to yours,
Bill
